Custard to Make the Universe Right Again


You guys, I had a really rough day. The kind of day that can only be salvaged by a really great treat. 

So Ben took me to get frozen custard from Ted Drewes. Because he knew that I needed the kind of happiness to reverse whatever ill-will the Universe was bearing down upon me. So my usually non-dairy self treated said self to a Blue Note Sundae: Vanilla custard topped with blueberries, lemon, and crushed Graham crackers. Well, that and a bit of people watching. 

Ya'll. The Universe is right again.

O! Wing Plus




Fried chicken is AMAZE. 

Now, imagine massive strips of tender chicken, covered with a crisp coating and covered with just the right amount of your favorite sauce. AND crisp fries-- can't forget those! When Ben and I feel like getting a quick chicken snack, O Wing  always comes up as an option especially if we're running errands on the north side of town.

What we love about O Wing's chicken is how perfectly cooked they are-- crisp but never greasy. Plus! there are a lot of different sauces to choose from! On this visit, Ben chose their tangy Buffalo sauce and I got their sweet Bee-Bee-Q. I also really love that they offer Korean fare, because, admittedly, I am always in the mood for any kind of Asian food 98% of the time. Ben? Not quite that often. So it's great to find restaurants that offer variety!

Winter on Art Hill





Art Hill in winter is cold, obviously. 

But Ben and I love visiting the St. Louis Art Museum regardless of the temps, and we, more often than not, spend some time admiring the view from Art Hill. When it's not crazy humid or flaming hot (i.e. most of the the time in StL), I actually even like climbing up the hill. Today, we were bundled up as we briskly walked past the resident ducks and the occasional early goose. 

Then, after our visit, we sauntered back down the hill and eagerly drove to reward ourselves with hot chocolate and coffee from Blueprint

Tex Mex in STL







Here's a bold and honest statement: Taco Circus makes the best Tex Mex food in St. Louis.

Our resident expert Ben thinks so, and I (though not a Tex Mex expert) damn well agree. We're super lucky to live close to this gem that's saved us multiple times when we've both come home late and don't really feel like cooking or when we've had a crappy day and need a delicious and quick pick me up. PLUS-- they use local meats and eggs!

We've tried almost every item on their menu, and we usually order a quesadilla to split (pork steak!). It is MASSIVE, and the meat is so tender and flavorful. Ben does love his guacamole and sour cream to go with it, but I douse my quesadilla slice with their creamy green tomatillo sauce. Since I was feeling breakfast-y, I also ordered a chorizo and egg taco which I also doused in green tomatillo sauce!

A Stroll Down Antique Row











After a huge weekend lunch (weekends are for indulging!), Ben and I decided to walk off our guilt down Antique Row in the Cherokee neighborhood. We both like perusing antique shops, but haven't actually gone back to Antique Row since we first moved to St. Louis about four years ago. Our first visit to the neighborhood was at the height of summer when loads of people were out and about, and I (being an introvert) just haven't been crazy to repeat the experience. But, it turns out, when one goes in the wintertime after lunch, there aren't a lot of people around! 

We checked out boxes of knickknacks and drawers of random parts and pieces, tossing ideas of what we could use as stamps or repurpose. We spent most of our time checking out used books because there is no such thing as having "too many books," but, alas, we didn't find any titles that we wanted to take home. I did, however, spot a wee kitty chilling by the sidewalk just begging to be cuddled!

Whisk Treats


On Valentine's day weekend, Ben and I treated ourselves to a relaxing walk down Antique Row in Cherokee. Then, to extra treat ourselves, we stopped by Whisk and picked up a few sweets to take home and nom while we watched the Great British Bake Off. 


Whisk is one of those adorably decorated shops, with lovely pastels and gold, framed pictures filling the wall, and pretty paper flowers hanging from the ceiling.  We were warmly greeted and even though it was late in the afternoon and the pickings sparse, we still came out with a couple of unique bites and a Valentine-themed goodie!

Spare No Rib


If you're driving down red brick-clad South Jefferson, Spare No Rib's bright white sign immediately demands your attention. I mean, that's how Ben and I ended up there one Saturday afternoon.


The interior is spacious and bright-- with a great view of Sump across the street. It seems that we missed the lunch rush and pretty much had the place to ourselves. 


After perusing their menu, I opted for a (super satisfying) combo of Chorizo & Egg Sope with a small side of Mac and Cheese, because why the hell not? Ben got the Rib Place with Cachete and Carnitas tacos. You guys, trust me when I say that BBQ (and all its fixins) go super well with tacos (and all its fixins) For realz. 



My sope was flavorful and the egg yolk added a scrumptious richness to the dish. And the Mac and Cheese! Holy moly, I am still thinking about how I should have ordered a full size serving. Ben's tacos were cram jam full of well-seasoned meat. And the ribs were totes solid.

Pizza Makes Everything Right Again: CWP



There are just some days when pizza seems like the only thing that will right the universe. It doesn't even matter what kind of pizza, at that point-- it just has to be hot, cheesy, and local (duh). Thank the Maker for CWP and their super fast and yummy St. Louis style pizza. That is, crisp, thin crust + Provel cheese. What is Provel, pray tell? It's a crazy combo of Provolone, Swiss, and Cheddar cheese. Miam.

Graffiti and Vintage Furniture









Ben and I aren't big on home decorating and prefer our spaces to be sparsely furnished. But, when we have to purchase things to plop our butts on or put our food on top of, we almost always end up buying vintage. South Jefferson Mid Century Modern is one of the shops we've had loads of luck with finding great pieces. They're only open on Saturdays, and though they update frequently on social media, they sell out really quickly.

Whenever I visit, I'm always so surprised at how quickly they turn over their inventory. It seems like each time I go, the stacks (and I really do mean STACKS) in the back room look different. We've dug through them so many times before to know! 

We checked out their sale a couple weeks ago and perused row after row of couch and armchair, coffee table and dresser. I drooled over black and white couches, and quilted chaise lounges, and really, really, really wanted to take home that black armchair even though it matches nothing I currently own.

Midweek Treat: Sugaree Key Lime Cheesecake


We like our treats.

We like them even more if they're local and amazing and come in cute little packages. Hello, Sugaree delights! 


We picked up this darling from Local Harvest, one of our fave groceries in town. And we're so glad we decided to indulge! Look at how creamy that cheesecake looks. And trust-- it was smooth, rich, and decadent, but the key lime was bright and definitely was a great balance to all that heavy creaminess.
